whom God hath hedged in
23Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, and whom God hath hedged in?
Job asks, in the darkest moments of his story, he has just lost everything. It's easy to judge not having experienced his pain, but this is such a human complaint. The kind of complaint that leaves our lips as a justifiable complaint only to hit us between the ears later as praise to a God who has never failed us even in the worst of our times.
Let's look first at the question, "Why is light given to a man whose way is hidden?" Light when darkness is the only place we feel comfort. Light when we don't know where we're headed... why?
105Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
What is this light that shines on our darkness, on our unknown paths? Is it a blessing, is it a curse, can it be both at the same time depending on which side of the darkness you're looking at it from? That light that shines on our unknown way is a blessing. We have a hard time though, recognizing blessings when we find ourselves on an unknown, uncomfortable, or downright painful path. We look at the light as there to illuminate our sad condition; we often fail to recognize that it is also showing us our path forward.
And then, there is this familiar complaint, to whom God has hedged in... A blessing? A curse? what is it? We need only look to the earlier words of Satan, to God when discussing the question of Job.
9Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?
10Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
Yep, the hedge Job perceives is real, Satan sees it too...
We may feel fully justified in complaining about the light and the hedge when we are sitting in darkness, and we will, at times, sit in darkness. We will complain right up to the point where we recognize the full beauty and blessing that both the light and the hedge have provided us on this unknown path that is this human life.
