But Jesus went unto the mount of Olives
40Some of the multitude therefore, when they heard these words, said, This is of a truth the prophet.
41Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, What, doth the Christ come out of Galilee?
42Hath not the scripture said that the Christ cometh of the seed of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?
43So there arose a division in the multitude because of him.
The people were divided over Jesus. Jesus taught, and in doing so divisions formed. This isn't to say Jesus teachings were divisive, but that the people were divided over His teachings. Division might seem a natural state for humanity, a state we all tend towards.
50Nicodemus saith unto them (he that came to him before, being one of them),
51Doth our law judge a man, except it first hear from himself and know what he doeth?
52They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and see that out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.
53And they went every man unto his own house:
The leaders of the People were divided and notice how quickly these divisions turn petty. These are the religious elite, at the highest level of Jewish society and they are throwing out barbs and accusations when challenged with a simple truth.
So where was Jesus in all this? Honestly that's the only question worth asking in the midst of irrational divisiveness.
1but Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.
Jesus went to pray! That was Jesus answer too all of this division... Jesus went to a favorite quiet place to pray. When you find yourself in a similar situation, simply ask yourself where would Jesus go? Go there and have a chat with your Father.
